Pickleball FAQ & Guide

Pickleball is a fast-paced paddle sport that blends the best of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It’s played on a small court with a perforated plastic ball and lightweight paddles—easy to learn, fun at any age, and perfect for Tucson’s sunny days.

The game began in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, when three dads created a backyard diversion for their kids during summer break.

Depending on which founder you ask, the name came from the family dog “Pickles,” who chased runaway balls, or from the “pickle boat” in rowing—a crew of leftover oarsmen—because the sport mixes elements of several games. Either way, the quirky name stuck.

Not yet. The Global Pickleball Federation and USA Pickleball are actively pursuing International Olympic Committee recognition, a key step toward future Olympic inclusion.

Games are played singles or doubles on a 20 × 44 ft court. Serves are underhand, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys begin, and you can’t volley inside the 7-ft “kitchen.” First team to 11 points (win by two) wins. New to the game? Try our Beginner Drop-In Clinics or Pickleball 101 lessons right here at Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club.

The playing surface is 20 ft wide by 44 ft long—the same size for singles and doubles. A full court pad (with run-offs) is ideally 30 × 60 ft.

Yes. A standard 60 × 120 ft tennis pad can fit up to four temporary pickleball courts when taped or painted correctly. That’s handy when you’re traveling, but nothing beats swinging on our 22 dedicated pickleball courts with LED lighting and permanent nets at Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club in Tucson.

Right here! Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club is Tucson’s premier pickleball club with open play, leagues, and court reservations for members and guests. We’re located at 4001 N Country Club Rd, Tucson, AZ 85716—come tour the courts today.

Our ladder and partner leagues rank teams by weekly results. Win and you “climb” to a higher court for the next round; lose and you drop a rung. After each five- or six-week session, top finishers earn prizes and bragging rights. Check the Pickleball Schedule for league start dates.

You’ll find everything you need right inside Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club’s Pro Shop. Our staff stocks top-rated pickleball paddles, balls, shoes, grips, and bags—plus demo paddles so you can try before you buy on our 22 pickleball courts. Members get special pricing, and you can walk out the same day fully equipped for lessons, clinics, and league play.
