The Basics: Rules and Etiquette
While pickleball is simple to pick up, there are a few rules that make the game unique:
- The ball must be served underhand and cross-court.
- You must let the ball bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed.
- Stay out of the non-volley zone (the “kitchen”) when hitting volleys.
As for what you can’t do: you can’t volley in the kitchen, you can’t serve overhand, and you can’t hit the ball twice in a row. The “number one” rule? Have fun while respecting your fellow players.
Fitness Benefits You’ll Notice
Pickleball is more than a game—it’s a workout. In just one hour of play, you can burn anywhere from 400 to 600 calories, depending on your intensity. Many players find that regular games lead to improved agility, balance, and cardiovascular health. And yes, with consistent play and a healthy diet, pickleball can help with weight loss.
In addition, you’ll enjoy a vibrant social atmosphere—playing with friends or even making new ones right here at Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club.
Who’s Playing?
The beauty of pickleball is its inclusivity. While the sport initially gained traction among retirees, the average player age is now dropping as younger athletes and families join in. At Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club, you’ll see everyone from high school students to grandparents sharing the courts.
